CLOVERDALE >> Clear Lake struck for four runs in the first two innings and a 4-3 lead, but the Fortuna Huskies dominated the rest of the way, beating the Cardinals 12-4 in the opening round of the Cloverdale Softball Tournament.

Fortuna rallied ahead to stay with a three-run third before adding single runs in the fourth and fifth and four more insurance runs in the sixth.

“It’s still early in the season and we’re still working out the kinks,” Clear Lake head coach Scott Schaefers said. “As long as we keep getting better, that’s the important thing.”

Clear Lake (4-2) plays two more games Saturday as the tournament wraps up. The Cardinals open with Piner in an early morning game.

Losing pitcher Atiana Patino threw a complete game, allowing 15 hits, striking out six and walking four. She had a much better day at the plate, doubling three times in four at-bats, driving in a run and scoring twice.

“She was struggling at the plate, so I was happy for her,” Schaefers said.

Hailey Perez went 1-for-2 with a RBI while Amelie Davis went 1-for-3 with a RBI. Faith McIntire, Ashlynn Cruz and Karsyn Greer had the other Clear Lake hits.

Schaefers said the Cardinals had their work cut out at the plate as Fortuna’s pitcher was throwing in the high 50s.

“Their pitching was pretty good,” he said.

Clear Lake opens its league schedule on Friday in St. Helena at 4 p.m.
