MIDDLETOWN >> Mia Martin’s inside-the-park grand slam highlighted a seven-run second inning for the Middletown Middle School softball team in a season-opening 9-1 non-league win over Pomolita on Monday afternoon in Middletown.
Martin had two hits on the day while driving in five runs. That was way more run support than winning pitcher Peyton Beehler needed. Beehler went the distance, tossing a four-hitter, while striking out 17 and walking only two.
Beehler and Stella Brand added two hits apiece while Claire Irwin went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Frankie Falgade (1-for-2) and Emmie Hernandez (1-for-3) drove in Middletown’s other runs.
Middletown had an 8-0 lead before Pomolita scored in the top of the fourth. Martin’s RBI single in the first put the Broncos ahead to stay.
The Broncos stole 12 bases in the win and didn’t commit an error.
