Zeus Romo wins first-place medal at Enter the Den tournament in Ukiah

CORNING >> The Gladiator Wrestling Club sent five team members to the all-girls Queen of the North Tournament Sunday in Corning while either others attended the Enter the Den tournament in Ukiah.
Zeus Romo had the only first for the Gladiators over the weekend, going 2-0 with one pin to win the kindergarten-first, 70-pound division at Ukiah High School. Second-place medals went to Cristiano Lopez, who went 4-1 with two pins and a technical fall; Ayden Santiago, who went 2-1 with two pins; Sebastian James, who went 3-1 with one pin and one technical fall; and Elijah Tucker, who went 2-1 with one pin. Tucker, a second-grader, was competing in a division for fourth- and fifth-graders at 73 pounds.
At the Queen of the North tournament in Corning, Kylie Dugger posted the top Gladiators finish, placing second with a 2-1 record, including one pin and one technical fall.
Three other Gladiators came away with third-place medals. Anastasia Garcia and Kailaya Philpot both went 3-1 with three pins while Sophia Olea went 3-1 with two pins and one technical fall.
“The girls battled hard,” Gladiators coach Jonathan Philpot said. “We will be back for the crowns next year. Little mistakes happen. We will correct them and will continue to get better.”
The Gladiator Wrestling Club is preparing for the Rocky Mountain Nationals on Feb. 7 in Medford, Oregon, and the NorCal Elementary State Championships in Orland.
