RENO >> Kelseyville High School wrestlers took part in the Sierra Nevada Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Reno Convention Center

Two Knights, Kendra Devries at 110 pounds and Kaia Calhoun at 115 pounds, both posted 3-2 records against a talented field, according to head coach Shane Carl.

“This week, the Knights bravely faced a tough challenge at the Sierra Nevada Classic, pushing our wrestlers beyond limits they never knew they could reach,” Carl said. “Competing in Reno was not just a test, it was a powerful confidence booster and a reality check as we gear up or the start of CMC (Coastal Mountain Conference) Duals on Jan. 7 at Fort Bragg. Many of our athletes have found their rhythm, and while the podium results may not reflect it, every wrestler gained invaluable experience that will help us grow as a young team. Although our team is young, including our five freshman, one sophomore, five juniors and four senior varsity wrestlers, our sights are firmly set on winning the section Team Duals championship.”

Devries wrestled well enough to qualify for day two after an impressive run to the quarterfinals, including pins in 41, 51 and 40 seconds

“An outstanding achievement for being a first-year wrestler at the high-caliber tournament,” Carl said.

Calhoun, who also reached day two, also wrestled well, according to Carl.

“She is making great strides toward her goal of competing in the state championships this postseason,” Carl said.

Also for Kelseyville, freshman Logun Whittle went 1-2, his victory coming against a top contender from Oregon; Cody Holmes, a senior, went 1-2, including a pin against a Nevada wrestler; and Hannah Bila, a senior, went 1-2, including a 52-second pin.

“I’m proud of the resilience and determination each wrestler displayed,” Carl said. “We are building something special, and together not only as a team but a family we will continue to dominate and improve each week.”
