KELSEYVILLE >> One week after playing for the championship in their own tournament, the Kelseyville Knights scored just five points in the first half of a 55-34 non-league loss to the Eureka Loggers in varsity boys basketball action Saturday afternoon at Kelseyville.

“We scored just one point in the first quarter,” Kelseyville head coach Chaze Russell said of his team’s rough start. “The shots were not falling. Even Gordon (Astrup) struggled inside.”

Astrup, the Knights’ All-Tournament player last week during the 53rd annual Stokes Tournament, failed to score in the game.

Kelseyville (4-7) trailed 31-5 by halftime.

“Their defense dictated our offense,” Russell added. “We were not finishing around the basket.”

Jacob Amendola’s 10 points led the Knights, who are one of the few Lake County teams in action off the two-week Christmas break. Nick Arredando added nine points and Jair Inostroza Carrillo had seven.

Kelseyville hits the road Friday to play Fortuna. Junior varsity action tips off at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.

Hugh O’Boyle and Chris Salmina hit some big 3-pointers down the stretch as the Kelseyville JV boys team beat Eureka 70-61 to climb over the .500 mark at 4-3.

“It was a good game to see where we’re at,” Kelseyville head coach Stan Weiper said. “The kids responded pretty well.”

Darin Sprague led the Knights with 32 points. The freshman has scored at least 17 points in all seven of Kelseyville’s games to date. O’Boyle added another 20 points and Salmina had 12, including two 3-pointers.

O’Boyle’s 3-pointer late in the game pushed the Knights’ lead to five points.

“It was a big one,” Weiper said of the shot. “He really stepped up.”

Eureka led 34-31 at halftime.
