Dragons, Real Madrid takes part in Wonderland Tournament in Redding
REDDING >> The Konocti Youth Soccer League sent two under-12 boys travel teams, the Dragons and Real Madrid, to the Wonderland Tournament last weekend in Redding and both won all three of their bracket games before losing in their respective championship games.
The Dragons, coached by Alberto Hernandez, Monica Hernandez and Shaun Robinson, lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in the finals, the winning goal coming with just seconds to play.
“That final was one of the most intense games we’ve ever experienced,” Hernandez said. “I am so proud of the boys for all the work they put in this weekend, leaving it all on the field. Big shoutout to my awesome assistants, Monica Hernandez and Shaun Robinson, for their dedication on the sidelines and to our wonderful parents and siblings who support our team through it all.”
Added Hernandez, “Our team played great soccer, the forwards and midfielders made some amazing plays, lots of touches, and some great passes for goals. Our defense was solid in the back, and our tandem of goalies kept it to only two goals with some jaw-dropping saves.”
The Real Madrid team, led by head coach Anne Skeen and assistant coach Eric Johnson, also had a productive weekend.
“It was exciting to watch the boys connect so well on the field,” Skeen said. “Every player stepped up and made an impact, whether it was through strong defense, smart passing or creating scoring opportunities.”
Johnson praised the team’s growing chemistry and hard work in practice, which is paying off in games.
“The team showcased outstanding skill, teamwork and determination throughout the competition,” Skeen said. “From the first whistle to the final game, every match highlighted the group’s ability to play together as a true unit.”
Both KYSL under-12 teams travel to Sacramento Saturday and Sunday for the Super Rec Cup. Ten other KYSL teams are also in action at various tournaments this coming weekend.
