UPPER LAKE >> The Kelseyville Knights broke open a competitive game at halftime with six second-half goals, culminating in an 8-0 victory over the Upper Lake Cougars in North Central League I varsity girls soccer action Tuesday in Upper Lake.
Kelseyville (9-0 league, 19-1 overall) registered its 13th shutout of the season while closing in on the league title. The Knights can clinch no worse than a tie with a win at home Thursday against Willits.
“Credit to Upper Lake for putting up a good fight and never giving up despite having only one or two substitutes,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “We were also able to rotate players from our second string, who stepped up and played very well.”
A pass from Vanessa Reyes to Kylee Denham, who finished off the play, put Kelseyville ahead to stay at 1-0. Later in the first half it was Mikaela Rico scoring unassisted for a 2-0 Knights lead.
The goals came fast and furious for the Knights in the second half. Banesa Munoz scored twice while Denham and Rico added their second goals of the match. Other goals went to Kat Wheelan and Genavieve Joaquin. Ximena Rico had an assist.
Upper Lake is 1-8 in league play and 3-14 overall.
Kelseyville hosts Willits on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the first of three straight home games for the Knights as they close out league play and their regular-season schedule. Lower Lake hosts Middletown on Oct. 23 and Lower Lake on Oct. 28. The North Coast Section playoffs follow.
