SONOMA >> The Northshore Cougars kept the game close for a half, but Sonoma pulled away over the final two quarters for a 28-0 victory in the varsity division of the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League on Saturday in Sonoma.
Upper Lake (0-6-1) trailed only 7-0 at halftime.
“In the second half we made mental mistakes and the penalties were not going our way,” Northshore head coach Bradley Brackett said. “Sonoma capitalized on the opportunity and didn’t take their foot off the gas. With seconds left in the fourth quarter Sonoma threw a Hail Mary pass to make it 26-0.”
Northshore suited up only 13 players for the second game in a row, according to Brackett.
“This is a young team that has to play every snap due to some unfortunate injuries this year,” Brackett said.
Jose Beecher led the Northshore running game with 75 yards, and Koen Gentry had 55 yards rushing and another 30 passing. Bennet Guardino had 30 yards receiving.
Beecher also had an interception on defense. Guardino and Gage Schramm each had nine tackles while Guardino had a pair of sacks.
Northshore returns home Saturday to play undefeated Westshore (7-0) at 7:30 p.m.
