Mustangs build 22-0 halftime lead in North Central League I action at St. Helena

ST. HELENA >> Middletown High School’s junior varsity football team continued its undefeated ways Friday night with a 30-12 win over the St. Helena Saints in North Central League I action at St. Helena.

Quarterback Kolton Costlow passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Mustangs improved to 4-0 in the league standings and 6-0 overall. Costlow opened the scoring with a 9-yard pass to Colton Karp in the first quarter as Middletown moved out to an 8-0 lead, Costlow passing to Jay Lee for the conversion.

The Mustangs increased their lead to 22-0 by halftime after Dre Goins’ 1-yard touchdown run and Costlow’s 15-yard TD pass to Karp in the second quarter. Costlow hit Hudson Kelly with the conversion pass following the Karp touchdown.

St. Helena closed to 22-6 in the third quarter, but Middletown put the game out of reach midway through the fourth quarter when Costlow broke loose on a 33-yard run. Costlow hooked up with Karp on the conversion pass.

The Saints (2-2, 3-3) added a late touchdown.

Costlow ended up with 191 yards on 9-of-10 passing. Lee had four catches for 111 yards while Karp caught five passes for 80 yards, including both of Costlow’s touchdowns. Costlow was the team’s leading rusher with 36 yards on 10 carries.

Luke Mace led Middletown’s defensive unit with nine total tackles while Devin Shippee had six. Lucas Hernandez intercepted a pass.

Middletown returns home next Friday to play Kelseyville at 5 p.m.
