SAN FRANCISCO >> Kelseyville dropped a 5-2 non-league decision to Gateway in varsity boys soccer action Saturday in San Francisco.
Jair Inostroza Carrillo scored both goals in the second half. The understrength Knights (7-4-2) trailed 2-0 at halftime and it was a 3-0 game before Carrillo, with an assist from Diego Rico, finally got the Knights on the scoreboard in the 48th minute.
“Down four starters today, including my starting keeper and backup keeper, for various reasons,” Kelseyville head coach Kc White said. “My guys battled hard today. All the credit to Jorge Gonzalez, who stepped in to play goalie today. He hasn’t played goalie since his KYSL days, he told me, but he stepped up when no one else would and made some nice saves today.”
Gateway, a member of the Bay Counties Central League, scored in the 16th and 22nd minutes to go up 2-0.
“At halftime I could have been complacent and tried to limit their scoring, but that has never been my mentality,” White said. “I have preached to the kids to never give up, so I try to take up that same charge. I moved Jair up to play forward, his natural position, and he did not disappoint. Unfortunately, a miscue in the back on the first play of the second half led to another Gateway goal and really put us behind the 8-ball.”
Gateway (4-3-1) opened up a 4-1 lead in the 70th minute before Carrillo answered with his second goal a minute later to make it 4-2, the shot assisted by Sebastian Cacho.
Gateway’s fifth goal came against Kelseyville’s reserves in the closing minutes.
“Before the game, I challenged my guys to go out and have fun,” White said. “The deck was stacked against us today, but they still went out and battled. This game will pay dividends for us down the road, which is why I schedule games like this. Win or lose, you learn something from playing teams you may see in the postseason. I’m proud of my guys.”
Kelseyville returns to its North Central League I schedule Tuesday in Willits beginning at 5 p.m.
