CLOVERDALE >> Esteban Muniz rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns as the Middletown High School junior varsity football team knocked off Cloverdale 36-0 on Friday night at Cloverdale.

It was the North Central League I opener for both teams. The Mustangs (1-0 league, 3-0 overall) rolled up 231 yards on the ground and another 50 through the air as quarterback Kolton Costlow completed his only two attempts, a 29-yard to Jay Lee and a 21-yarder to Lucas Hernandez.

The Mustangs recovered three fumbles, one that was returned for a touchdown by Costlow. Lee and Brooks Schuster had the other fumble recoveries.

“The kids started off slow tonight but woke up after Fernando Ruiz caused a fumble in the backfield where Kolton Costlow took it for a TD with 5:05 left in the first quarter,” Middletown head coach Paul Silva said. “It really jump-started our team, and there was no slowing them down after that.”

Middletown’s defense also recorded eight sacks, two of them by Ruiz and one each for Hernandez, Lee, Luke Mace, Noah Toledo, Colton Karp and Benji Pimentel. Mace led the team with five tackles, Muniz had four and Karp and Hernandez three apiece.

Besides a forfeit win over Berean Christian to open the season, the Mustangs have shut out Piedmont (40-0) and Cloverdale in back-to-back weeks.

“It was a great win against a very good team,” Silva said.

Middletown hosts Upper Lake (1-0, 2-1) next Friday. Upper Lake won last year’s league championship.
