KELSEYVILLE >> Emptying his bench early on, Kelseyville High School boys soccer head coach Kc White experienced a rare low-stress afternoon on the pitch Monday as the Knights breezed past the Laytonville Warriors 9-1 in non-league action at Kelseyville.

Kelseyville (5-3-1) built a 5-0 lead in the first half, by which time the Knights reserves were already in the game.

“It was good to bet back out on the field and put Saturday behind us,” White said, referring to a 3-1 loss to Fortuna on Saturday in the championship game of the annual Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament in Upper Lake. “We jumped on them quickly. I started my starters and they built a 3-0 lead in 10 minutes. From that point on I put my bench in.”

Added White, “It was valuable time for my second-string players who haven’t played much in the past week or so due to the high-pressure games we were involved in. I was without three guys today who were nursing injuries, including my senior captain, Miguel Corona. The hope is he will be ready to play by Tuesday next week versus Fort Bragg.”

Sebastian Cacho and Gustavo Garcia Cornejo each had two goals in the win. Diego Rico, Jake Smart, Angel Bernal, Julian Arias and Omar Mercado Marquez also had goals. Julio Lopez led the Knight with two assists while Smart, Garcia Cornejo, Jair Inostroza Carrillo, Leland Illarraza Bovo and Manny Hernandez had one apiece.

“Gustavo Garcia Cornejo took full advantage of the playing time by scoring twice and getting an assist,” White said. “Julian Arias has jumped back and forth from the starting lineup to the second string, and he played really well today, scoring his first career goal.”

Added White, “I liked the attitude from my starters in supporting their teammates today. They were up and cheering them on, which is what it should be about.”

Kelseyville opens its North Central League I schedule Thursday against Clear Lake in Lakeport at 6:15 p.m.
