Fanucchi gives varsity Trojans early spark

Lower Lake youth football team knocks off Willits 42-6, improves record to 3-0

WILLITS >> Improving to 3-0 on the season, the Lower Lake varsity youth football team took it to Willits, 42-6, in Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League action Saturday in Willits.

“The offensive and defensive lines really set the tone for our team all night,” Lower Lake head coach Mark Garner said. “The whole team competed hard. It was a great team effort. I’m really proud of these young men.”

Braylen Fanucchi scored on Lower Lake’s first play from scrimmage, an 80-yard run that put the Trojans ahead to stay at 6-0. Fanucchi scored again minutes later following an Adriyan Diaz interception, running it in from 20 yards out to make it 12-0.

Lower Lake scored once more before halftime, Diaz hauling in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Michael Garner. The two-point conversion kick pushed the Trojans’ lead to 20-0.

Willits returned the second-half kickoff a touchdown before Richard Occhino Jr. scored for Lower Lake on a 40-yard run. Another conversion kick increased the Trojans’ lead to 28-6.

Garner’s 6-yard touchdown made it 34-6, and the Trojans added one final score on a Wyatt Chalecki 30-yard run followed by a two-point conversion kick. The mercy rule came into play at that point.

Damion Giambra anchored Lower Lake’s defense with four tackles.

Lower Lake returns home next Saturday to play Cloverdale (2-1). Pee wee action kicks off at 3:30 p.m., junior varsity action follows at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity game follows at 7:30 p.m.
