LOWER LAKE >> Kat Wheelan scored twice in the first half and Arionna Sanderson added an insurance goal in the second half Tuesday as the Kelseyville High School varsity girls soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a 3-0 non-league victory over the Lower Lake Trojans at Lower Lake.

Kelseyville is off to a 6-0 start under head coach Irma Rodriguez.

“It was a solid team effort all around,” Rodriguez said. “The Lady Knights continue to show their growth and determination. My assistant coaches and I are super proud of all of them.”

Wheelan’s first goal with 25 minutes left in the first half proved to be all the offense the Knights would need. Wheelan scored off a crossing pass from Banesa Munoz.

“A beautiful cross,” Rodriguez said of the assist from Munoz.

Wheelan scored again just a few minutes later to make it 2-0, the halftime score.

“In the second half we rotated in mostly non-starters, and the girls stepped up to the challenge,” Rodriguez said. “Lower Lake applied plenty of pressure and fought hard throughout, but the Knights held strong. The defenders continued to provide strength in the back, clearing plays and sending the ball forward to create opportunities.”

Kelseyville was awarded a penalty shot with 15 minutes left in the game and Sanderson knocked the ball into the net.

“We were able to get all players into the game, including debuting Brooke Poff as goalkeeper in the second half,” Rodriguez said. “Brooke has stepped up to be the new backup goalie as the team prepares to graduate senior keeper Cassie Rodriguez this year.”

Kelseyville plays Credo on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Upper Lake as part of the Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament. Lower Lake (0-3) visits Point Arena on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
