CALISTOGA >> Faith McIntire went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and winning pitcher Atiana Patino went 2-for-2 with a double and four runs scored as the Clear Lake High School softball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 12-2 win in five innings against non-league opponent Calistoga on Wednesday in Calistoga.
Clear Lake’s scheduled North Central League I game with Lower Lake was rescheduled for May, and the Cardinals were happy to find a team to fill the spot rather than have a bye date, according to head coach Scott Schaefers.
Both young teams, the host Wildcats and visiting Cardinals, were just happy to be out there playing a game, according to Schaefers.
“We both just want to see our girls get some playing time and improve,” Schaefers said of the two teams.
Clear Lake (5-4) scored at least one run in every inning, including a four-run top of the first that put the Cardinals ahead to stay.
Patino allowed only two hits and one earned run while striking out eight and walking four.
In the midst of their league schedule, the non-league game offered the Cardinals a bit of a chance to refocus, according to Schaefers.
“The girls played relaxed, played loose and had fun,” Schaefers said. “It was nice to see.”
McIntire and Patino combined to score seven of Clear Lake’s 12 runs while going a combined 5-for-5 at the plate. Ashlynn Cruz added an RBI triple while Lindee Bingham went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. The Cardinals also received hits from Cali Albaum, Kam Cresto and Hailey Perez.
Patino stayed in the game despite taking a line drive off her cheek bone while pitching.
“She wanted to stay in, and she pitched well,” Schaefers said.
Clear Lake resumes league play Friday in Middletown at 4 p.m.
