Madi Byrne connects for second grand slam, third homer of season for Mountain Vista

KELSEYVILLE >> The potential tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game as the Mountain Vista Middle School Lancers held off the Terrace Vikings in a 12-11 softball slugfest Monday at Kelseyville.
Madi Byrne (3-for-3) blasted her second grand slam and third home run of the season for the Lancers (4-1), who were coming off a loss to Obsidian Middle School. She also doubled.
“Terrace should be the team to beat this year,” Kelseyville head coach Patrick Mick said. “They have a great pitcher, and their first four hitters are very powerful.”
Taylor Wood pitched the first four innings for the victory.
Brooke Poff and Gabby Keyes went 2-for-3 for Mountain Vista.
Terrace statistics were not reported.
In other middle school action Monday:
Middletown 10, Obsidian 9
At Middletown, the Middletown Broncos scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to walk off with the win against the visiting Obsidian Bears.
Winning pitcher Lilliaunna Reyes went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, Anaya Kilstrom went 3-for-4 with a double, and Emma Davis went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs as Middletown improved to 5-0 on the season. Mia Martin (1-for-4) knocked in two runs.
Eden Sparks homered for Obsidian. Zeanna Carver and Lexi Mitchell both went 2-for-3. Losing pitcher Alison Bobbitt struck out seven.
“Our defense made a couple of infield errors in the third inning that allowed Middletown to score five runs,” Obsidian head coach Luis Perez said.
Obsidian is 1-1 in league. It was Middletown’s league opener.
Upper Lake 12, Lucerne 0
At Lucerne, Bella Stillman pitched five innings for the victory as the Upper Lake Wildcats shut out Lucerne.
Kylee Solorio (3-for-3) singled, doubled and tripled for Upper Lake. Bella Stillman and Charlie Robbins also went 3-for-3.
“Hitting was on point today,” Upper Lake head coach Wyatt Hensley said.
Upper Lake is 1-0 in league and 3-0 overall.
