FRESNO >> The CORE Wrestling Club sent six wrestlers to the California State Tournament last weekend in Fresno.
“I am very proud of all of them,” CORE coach Daniel Hooten said. “It takes a lot of courage to drive five hours and wrestle wrestlers at the highest level the state has to offer.”
Making the trip were Eric Holley, Ryan Ramirez, Wyatt Hooten, Sampson Wetmore, Tucker Heywood and Georgia Emerson.
Wetmore upset the No. 1 seed in his second match en route to a second-place finish.
“Sampson had a great day,” Hooten said. “His championship match was close as well, only falling short by a few points. Sampson placed second and got himself a bear (trophy).”
Emerson, competing in the 125-pound school girls bracket, which featured 16 wrestlers overall, also turned in a solid effort, according to Hooten.
“She wrestles her heart out with a very close second match,” Hooten said. “Georgia is determined to get better every time she steps on the mat, whether it’s practice or a tournament. She has a very good work ethic and carries herself with dignity. We will miss her in the wrestling room next year as she will be going up to high school.”
