MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown High School senior Krystal Ocken won the shotput and discus during the Middletown Field Event Invitational on Friday at Middletown High School.

Ocken topped the field in the shotput at 29 feet, 8.5 inches. Rubi Reygoza of Kelseyville finished second at 28-2.5. In the discus, Ocken had a winning toss of 77-3 followed by Reygoza at 74-0.

“Ocken only had one week of practice after competing in the wrestling state championship last weekend,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall aid. “This is a good starting point for her, and I know she will continue to grow throughout the season.”

Middletown’s Isa Barnes won the high jump, clearing 4-6. Teammate Mia Hoogendoorn came in second at 4-2.

“She has been working hard in practice, so it is great to see the results of that hard work,” Hall said. “While I kept all of my other sophomores down in the frosh-soph division, Isa is solely a varsity athlete, and I think she will rack up some more first-place finishes this season.”

Kelseyville’s Nyejzniya Krohn won the long jump in 15-0. Barnes came in second at 14-8.5.

Varsity boys

Middletown four-year varsity veteran Bryan Sanchez cleared 11-0 to easily win the pole vault. Teammate Aiden Cadwallader was next at 7-6.

“He has improved year after year,” Hall said. “Toward the end of last year he tied our school record with a jump of 11-6. We are still early in the second, so it is great to see he is already nearing his personal record.”

Other top Middletown finishers were Seth Watson, who was second in the discus at 115-7; Bryton Caviness, who was second in the high jump at 5-2; and Elijah Norris, who was second in the long jump at 16-4.

Kelseyville’s Nikolai Trippo finished third in the shotput at 34-7, and teammate Jacob Parker was third in the high jump at 5-0.

Frosh-soph boys

Middletown’s Ren Ueno won the frosh-soph pole vault at 7-6.

“Ren is an amazing distance runner, but he is starting to really pick up the pole vault,” Hall said. “Due to the weather, he has only had limited practice time with full vaults, so 7-6 is just the beginning for him.”

Hector Murillo of Lower Lake won the long jump in 17-4 and teammate Raijhier McKneely won the high jump in 5-2.

Kelseyville’s John Carr won the shotput in 35-8.

Frosh-soph girls

Middletown’s Ally Cherry won the frosh-soph girls pole vault in 6-0.

“She won the pole vault today in softball pants,” Hall said. “Cherry is dual sporting in track and softball where she will be playing varsity as a freshman. Cherry is an amazing athlete and has such a strong work ethic. After she completed her event, she went over to the softball field to complete her (softball) practice.”

Middletown’s Veronica Daughtery won the long jump in 13-2 while teammate Jadyn Owens was second in 12-5.5.

“Daughtery is another one of my hard workers,” Hall said. “She improved a lot last season as a freshman and is already picking up where she left off.”

Lower Lake’s Cristal Castro-Luna won the high jump in 3-5.

“A lot of Lake County athletes did well,” Hall said of Friday’s action. “All of our teams have increased in number since last year, which is great to see.”

Looking back at Middletown’s overall performance, Hall said he was quite pleased.

“Overall, it was a successful meet for my team. While I have a large team this year, a big percentage of it is new to the team or new to track in general,” Hall added. “Today I saw a lot of potential from my team, and I hope we can build on today and keep progressing through the year.”
