WILLITS >> Logan Olivares and Sampson Wetmore of the CORE Wrestling Club secured first-place finishes Sunday at the Gatekeeper tournament in Willits.
CORE sent seven wrestlers to the competition.
“I’m always proud of our kids,” CORE coach Thaddeus Wetmore said. “There’s something about wrestling that gets lost every time we talk about the wins and losses and medals. It really is a fight without punches. These are young kids who show up and step onto the mat, without fear, knowing that they’re about to be in a fight and they may be walking into a meat grinder.”
Added Wetmore,” Our kids are ready and welcome that fight, and I’ll always be proud of them for that.”
Olivares won the six-and-under pee wee division (40-47 pounds) while Wetmore took top honors in the 10-and-under intermediate division (83-88 pounds).
Gerardo “Tito” Rodriguez came in second in the high school boys division (93-101 pounds). Rain Pena placed third in the 6-and-under pee wee division (40-47 pounds).
Tucker Heywood finished fourth in under-12 novice division (83-89 pounds) while Georgia Emerson came in fourth in the middle school girls division (117-129 pounds). Both wrestlers went 2-2.
Eric Holley placed fifth and ninth as he double-bracketed, wrestling in the 8-and-under bantam (45-49 pounds) and 8-and-under bantam (47-58 pounds) divisions.
CORE wrestlers are part of the Gladiator Brawl on Sunday at Lower Lake High School. Action begins at 9 a.m.
