Middletown club volleyball team goes 7-1 at Quijote Tournament Series in Cottonwood

COTTONWOOD >> The Heat 14-and-under club volleyball team out of Middletown finished second in the gold bracket with a 7-1 record Saturday during the Quijote Tournament Series at West Valley High School in Cottonwood.

One of 21 teams entered, the Heat squad won its first seven matches before finally losing to Shasta Elite 22-20, 21-18 in the gold bracket championship match.

“We played six back-to-back matches before a much-needed 45-minute break, then finished up with the final two matches,” Heat head coach Erika Galvan said. “Playing this many games in a day shows that grit and mental toughness that our girls have. I’m so proud of how hard they worked to earn a win on each set.”

The Heat scored four straight-set wins in pool play, defeating NSVA Wallace 21-8, 21-10, Momentum Blue 21-7, 21-14, NSVA Wallace 21-14, 21-6, and Momentum Blue 21-10, 21-14

In bracket play, the Heat notched three more straight-set victories, taking down NSVA Red Bluff 21-15, 21-17, Momentum Black 21-19, 21-18, and Momentum Purple 21-6, 22-20, before losing to Shasta Elite in the finals.

Team leaders were middle hitter Emma Davis with 34 kills, 11 aces, 101 digs and one block; setter Trinity Galvan with 24 aces, 56 digs, eight kills and 44 assists; opposite hitter Kaia Bohan with 22 aces, 61 digs, six kills and 11 assists; and outside hitter Emma Jones with 12 kills and 22 aces.

“We have a mix of more seasoned players and new players, and the older players really worked to help the younger players out on the court,” Galvan said.

The 14-and-under team returns to action Feb. 23.
