KENTFIELD >> Rain, hail and wind greeted players from both teams as the Kelseyville Knights fell to Branson 2-0 in varsity boys soccer action on a stormy Thursday at the College of Marin in Kentfield.

“I’m going to start by saying that I’m happy that we are switching to fall (soccer) next year,” Kelseyville head coach KC White said. “The conditions today were difficult, to say the least. Downpours or rain and hail mixed with wind gusts over 40 mph. The students were saying that the rain hurt at times. Both teams played in the same conditions, so it’s no excuse for our lack of effort today.”

Branson led 1-0 at halftime.

“As far as the game goes, we didn’t play that well,” White added. “We created a few chances, but not enough to really threaten Branson. Branson’s first goal came late in the first half. Branson earned a penalty kick, which was initially blocked by my keeper, Cameron Smith. However, a lack of hustle by my team allowed for a goal off the rebound. It really is unacceptable for a guy to get a rebound like that and not be threatened at all by a defender. It’s just another example of the mental lapses that we have had this season.”

Branson scored early in the second half to go up 2-0.

“A goal that skipped off the wet turf past my keeper’s hands,” White said.

Kelseyville falls to 2-14-3 on the season. The Knights play Roseland University Prep in a league game Monday at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
