LAKEPORT >> One mistake cost Kelseyville a chance to win its first North Central League I game on Thursday, the Knights settling for a 1-1 tie with the Cloverdale Eagles at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.
“One mistake tonight led to really Cloverdale’s only opportunity on goal, and they took advantage of it to take a 1-0 lead into halftime,” Kelseyville head coach KC White said. “It really was unfortunate because we dominated the first half, and the game as a whole, but one error was costly.”
Kelseyville tied it in the second half on a goal by Luis Valdovinos, assisted by Luis Alvarado.
“Kelseyville produced a fantastic first 30 minutes tonight,” White said. “The only thing missing was some scoring. We created chance after chance and were finding open guys, but we just couldn’t find a touch to put something on goal.”
Kelseyville finally found the scoreboard in the 45th minute.
“Luis Valdovinos took advantage of an open goal with the keeper pulled out of the net and got us level,” White said. “We continued to pressure their goal, but we couldn’t get the magic tough. We had a beautiful counterattack on the final play of the game. Sebastian Cacho had a shot on goal that was saved by the keeper. Luis Valdovinos followed on the rebound, but missed high, which essentially ended the game.”
Added White, “The game is pretty much a microcosm of our season. We play well, make a mistake, fall behind, and have to fight back. We fought back today but couldn’t pull ahead.”
Kelseyville hits the road Saturday to play Roseland University Prep on Sonoma Academy High Schoo’s field in Santa Rosa. Action begins at 4 p.m. All three Kelseyville teams are in action, beginning with the junior varsity boys at noon and the varsity girls at 2 p.m.
