KELSEYVILLE >> Playing on their own field for the first time this season, the Kelseyville Knights dropped a 5-0 non-league decision to the Healdsburg Greyhounds in varsity boys soccer action Saturday afternoon in Kelseyville.
Adding insult to injury, Healdsburg took a 2-0 lead in the first half without taking a single shot on goal.
“We had a couple of miscues on two long balls that bounced over my keeper’s head,” Kelseyville head coach KC White said. “I thought I had déjà vu. We were the better team in the first half, but silly mistakes again cost us today.”
Kelseyville (1-12-2) kept the score at 2-0 until well into the second half as the Greyhounds (6-4-3) didn’t score again until the 70th minute. They tacked on three goals in the final 10 minutes to go up 5-0.
“My team ran out of steam and desire once that third goal found the back of the net,” White said. “We knew this would be a tough game. I’m happy with our effort in the first 70 minutes, not so much in the last 10.”
Junior varsity
Healdsburg also won the junior varsity game, 2-1, but the Knights (0-4) did score their first goal of the season, that on a Jorge Gonzalez shot late in the first half to tie the game at 1-1.
The Greyhounds scored 15 minutes into the game to go up 1-0.
“We didn’t clear the ball properly and Healdsburg took advantage,” White said.
“We answered about 10 minutes later,” White added. “Jorge Gonzalez had a free kick from about 40 yards out and placed it beautifully into the upper right corner of the goal … the first goal of the season for the JV team, and what a spectacular goal it was.”
Healdsburg pushed ahead to stay in the 68th minute.
“We threatened quite a bit in the final five to 10 minutes, but couldn’t get the equalizer,” White said. “I’m super proud of this group. They’re getting better and better, which has me excited for the future.”
The Kelseyville JVs are off until Saturday when they play Roseland University Prep at Sonoma Academy’s field in Santa Rosa. The JVs kick off at noon. The varsity girls (2 p.m.) and varsity boys (4 p.m.) follow.
