CITRUS HEIGHTS >> Diego Rico’s goal briefly tied the game in the second half, but the San Juan Spartans scored in the 63rd minute to snap a 1-1 tie and beat the Kelseyville Knights 2-1 in non-league varsity boys soccer action in Citrus Heights.

“Mental mistakes that we should not be making have led to us losing every game this season,” Kelseyville head coach KC White said. “We play good enough to stay in games, but then we make mental errors that compound in giving up goals. Also, we have gotten away from making the simple play. I need to figure out what to do as a coach to click with this specific group of students because something is missing that is preventing us from reaching our potential.”

All the scoring took place in the second half. San Juan (2-5-1) struck first, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute after the Knights failed to properly clear the ball, according to White.

“We answered back four minutes later,” White said. “Luis Alvarado sent a ball up to Diego Rico, who smashed it from about 20 yards out to get us level.”

Another mistake by the Knights (0-10-2) on a Spartans throw-in led to the game winning goal in the 63rd minute.

“I thought Diego Rico had his best game of the year,” White said. “He was looking to pass today and that is when he is at his best.”

Kelseyville’s junior varsity and varsity teams return to action Monday against Casa Grande in Petaluma. JV action starts at 4 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 6 p.m.
