SAN FRANCISCO >> No matter the metric used, the Middletown High School varsity volleyball team completed its most successful season in more than a decade Wednesday night despite a 25-10, 25-15, 25-23 loss to Urban High School in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division 4 playoffs in San Francisco.

While Middletown closed out its year, Urban advances to the quarterfinals Saturday night against No. 1 seed Vintage in Napa.

“We were playing aggressively, but Urban kept digging up everything we threw at them,” Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said. “The girls worked hard but weren’t able to come up with the win.”

Middletown posted a 21-9 overall mark this season, including a 10-4 record in the North Central League I (third place). The last time the Mustangs were as competitive was the 2012 season when they went 19-7 and also lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Sophomore setter Isa Barnes finished with team highs in assists (14), service points (7) and aces (2). Mia Hoogendoorn and Makayla Mace, both seniors, led the team with seven and four kills, respectively. Hoogendoorn also had a team-best 25 digs and three blocks while Mace added 23 digs. Carly Johnson had four kills and a team-high four blocks.

“I am so proud of these girls and what they were able to accomplish this season,” Galvan said.
