M’town runners look sharp in CMC opener

Boys top the field at Fort Bragg while girls race a strong second

FORT BRAGG >> Middletown High School’s varsity boys topped the field Wednesday while the Mustang girls placed second during the first Coastal Mountain Conference cross country meet of the season, this one at the 3.1-mile Noyo Headlands Park course on the Mendocino County coast.

All of the CMC’s North Central League I teams participated and Middletown, led by third-place finisher Quinn Murray, finished with 34 points, well ahead of host Fort Bragg’s 66 and St. Helena’s 79. Kelseyville (104), Cloverdale (124), Willits (134) and Lower Lake (177) rounded out the field.

Middletown placed four runners in the top 10 and its fifth scoring runner came in 11th, rounding out a solid day for head coach Taylor Tiraterra’s squad.

Cole Lane of Willits topped the field in 18 minutes, 4 seconds and was followed across the finish line by Chris Island (18:17) of Fort Bragg and Murray (18:26), who was just two seconds ahead of teammate Ren Ueno (18:28) in fourth place. Damien Lopez (18:39) of Fort Bragg came in fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 was Diego Sanchez (18:44) of St. Helena, Richard Ramos (18:54) of Middletown, Gael Lopez (19:03) of Cloverdale, Isael Haro (19:04) of Middletown, and Gerardo Garcia (19:15) of Kelseyville.

Bryan Sanchez of Middletown came in 11th at 19:21.

Armando Perez of Lower Lake placed 18th in 20:42.

Middletown had 15 of the 56 runners entered in the race.

Girls

Middletown and St. Helena staged a pretty good fight for first place, the Saints ended up with 26 points to Middletown’s 31. Kelseyville was third in the team standings with 71 points. No other school had the necessary five runners to make a complete team.

Corinna Schlatter of St. Helena dominated the field, winning in 18:05, more than two minutes in front of runner-up Liz Silva (20:21) of Cloverdale. Tilly Dodd of St. Helena finished third in 20:50, Malia McGrath of Cloverdale came in fourth in 21:13 and Cat Barriga of Middletown was fifth in 21:43.

Also placing in the top 10 were Bailey Smith of Middletown, sixth in 22:29; Nala Montgomery of Middletown, seventh in 22:39; Loma Henry of St. Helena, eighth in 23:09; Jennifer Jimenez of Middletown, ninth in 24:28; and Ari Demen of Mendocino, 10th in 25:00.

Lorena Garcia-Panteleon of Kelseyville finished 13th in 26:27 while teammate Yariana Montergo was 14th in 26:28.

Denise France of Lower Lake placed 24th in 28:33 and teammate Angela Martin was 25th in 30:07.

Nikki Buechler of Clear Lake was 35th in 37:37.

Schedule

The NCL I teams meet in Kelseyville next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
