UPPER LAKE >> Upper Lake High School’s varsity boys soccer team wrapped up play in its own tournament, the Tyler Duncan Memorial, on Saturday with a 6-1 loss to Credo of Rohnert Park.
The Cougars (0-4) lost 3-0 to Willits in Friday tournament action.
Against Credo, Jaden Nunez scored in the second half with an assist from Gavin Dooley. Upper Lake trailed 4-0 at halftime.
“We played amazing,” Upper Lake head coach Thomas Santana said. “Kyler (Brothers, Upper Lake’s keeper) had three saves in the first. We played great and are definitely trending upward. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season has to offer.”
In the loss to Willits on Friday, Brothers, a senior, moved from center back – a position where he earned All-League honors a year ago – to keeper in an effort to bolster the Upper Lake defense.
“And it helped a lot,” Santana said. “He played amazing, having eight saves.”
Sophomore Mario Olvera filled in for Brothers at center back.
“He did an amazing job working alongside Adam Moran,” Santana said. “They combined for another five saves.”
Fortuna’s varsity boys and varsity girls repeated as Tyler Duncan Memorial champions.
“The tournament went great, and we just hope to continue to grow it and improve it every year,” Santana said.
Plans are afoot to expand the field to 16 teams in both the varsity boys and varsity girls divisions next season.
