MIDDLETOWN >> Out with the old, in with the new. That’s especially true with gymnasiums.
Middletown Middle School’s A volleyball team played its final match in the school’s old gym Monday evening, beating Lucerne 25-6, 25-15. The Broncos will play their final home match of the season Wednesday against Terrace School of Lakeport, hosting the Vikings in a new air-conditioned facility. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new gym takes place at 3 p.m. prior to the B match between Middletown and Terrace, which starts at 4:30 p.m. The A match follows.
“These girls were full of excitement tonight as they played their final game in our old gym,” Middletown head coach Niki Emberson said. “We finally get to play in our brand new gym this Wednesday for our final home game of the season. Our gym has had a few setbacks, and we have been patiently waiting for this moment to arrive.”
Middletown will also honor its eighth-graders Wednesday during its final home match.
“Our eighth-graders are overly excited, and they energy was definitely present tonight,” Emberson said.
Ariana Granados led the Broncos with seven aces and a kill, Stella Brand added six aces, eight assists and a kill, Aleena Fiora had four aces, and Alexis Theodorou contributed five kills.
Middletown improved to 6-2 in the league standings.
In the B match, the undefeated Broncos (8-0) defeated Lucerne 25-11, 25-8, handing Madison Lewis an additional 13th birthday present. Lewis finished with seven aces and a kill. Aleah Kilstrom led the Broncos with 11 aces, Mailani Escobar added four aces, and Grace Hawkins and Katalia Mendez each had three aces. Abby Tribby had a team-best three kills.
“We have a deep bench with a roster of 14, and all of these girls continue to grow each week,” Emberson said. “They cannot wait to be the very first team to play in our brand new gym this Wednesday. After playing and practicing in the heat with no air conditioning all season, you can imagine how highly anticipated this new gym is. We are so ready to say goodbye to our old, hot gym and hello to our brand new homecourt.”
