WILLITS >> Vanessa Reyes scored a pair of goals to spark the Kelseyville Knights in a 5-1 girls soccer win over the Willits Wolverines on Saturday afternoon in Willits.
Jackie Chavez, Kylee Denham and Mikaela Rico added goals as the Knights (11-0 league, 17-1-1) won their 14th straight game. With three league games remaining, including a road contest Tuesday in Cloverdale, Kelseyville needs one more win to clinch the undisputed league title for a second year in a row.
“The Lady Knights had a strong first half and came out ready to play,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “From the opening whistle, our defense held strong against the Willits Wolverines, not allowing them to break through.”
Chavez scored eight minutes into the game to put Kelseyville ahead to stay. Reyes scored the first of her two goals at the midway point of the first half, connecting on a free kick that was “a great shot,” according to Rodriguez, and the Knights had a 3-0 lead just two minutes later when Reyes scored again.
With four minutes left in the half, Denham’s goal made it 4-0.
Willits (4-4-2, 5-7-2) opened the scoring in the second half, closing to 4-1, and things remained unchanged until Rico scored with two minutes left in the game.
“We know the heat may have gotten to the girls a little bit, but they continued to push through,” Rodriguez said of her players. “I have to give a big shoutout to the defense in the back. They played a great game and worked hard all game long to protect our goal and shut down opportunities. They stayed strong, communicated and continued battling even when Willits put the pressure on. They deserve the recognition for the work they put in back there.”
Kelseyville’s game at Cloverdale (5-5-1) on Tuesday is scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m.
