LOWER LAKE >> Two varsity football teams streaking in the opposite directions collided Friday night at Gordon Sadler Field in Lower Lake, the Cloverdale Eagles rolling past the Lower Lake Trojans 30-7 in North Central League I South action.
The Eagles (1-0 league, 6-1 overall) remained red-hot, winning their sixth straight game. The Trojans (0-2, 1-5) dropped their fourth in a row.
“They’re a good team, they played well,” Lower Lake head coach Jay Jakubowski said of the Eagles. “We made costly mistakes at crucial moments. That’s been our MO (modus operandi) all season.”
Lower Lake’s only points came on a long kickoff return by Roy Percoats in the second quarter that cut Cloverdale’s lead to 14-7. The Trojans’ offense threatened a handful of times but couldn’t cash in.
“We kept getting in our own way on offense,” Jakubowski said. “We had snaps on the ground, some penalties, and we couldn’t catch the ball. Every time we got some momentum we made a mistake. It was that kind of night.”
The Eagles took a 23-7 lead into halftime and added a final insurance score in the third quarter.
“We played a pretty good second half,” Jakubowski said.
Lower Lake game statistics weren’t available.
Cloverdale won the junior varsity game 21-20.
GAME NOTES: The six-game winning streak by the Eagles is their longest since they also won six in a row in 2009. Cloverdale’s final three games are all South contests – Oct. 23 at home against St. Helena, Oct. 30 at home against Middletown, and Nov. 7 at Stuart Hall (Kezar Stadium in San Francisco).
The Trojans remain home next Friday to play Middletown (1-1, 5-2) while Cloverdale returns home to take on St. Helena (0-1, 4-3) in NCL I South action.
