Kelseyville, Middletown, Lower Lake girls put another one into the win column

UPPER LAKE >> Mikaela Rico scored Kelseyville’s first three goals during a 6-0 first half as the Knights shut out the Upper Lake Cougars 10-0 in North Central League I girls soccer action Thursday in Upper Lake.
Kelseyville (3-0 league, 9-1-1 overall) is 9-0-1 in its last 10 games, including six straight wins, five of them shutouts.
Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez emptied her bench in the second half against Upper Lake (1-1, 1-6), which was coming off a 1-0 upset win over Clear Lake on Tuesday in Lakeport.
“Coming into the second half, the Lady Knights were able to get their second team on the field while also giving several players the opportunity to play different positions,” Rodriguez said.
Grace Hobbs, who normally plays keeper for the Knights, scored her first two goals of the season while teammate Aubrey Mullen also scored twice. Hiliana Rico, Jacky Chavez and Vanessa Reyes had Kelseyville’s other goals.
“The Lady Cougars continued to compete and never gave up,” Rodriguez said. “They played with determination and continued to fight until the final whistle.”
Kelseyville hosts Willits on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. Upper Lake hits the road Tuesday to play Fort Bragg at 6:45 p.m.

Clear Lake 4, Willits 1
At Willits, Clear Lake scored all of its goals in the first half while beating the Willits Wolverines for its first league win.
“Happy to see us back with smiles,” Clear Lake head coach Gustavo Carbajal said Clar Lake dropped its first two league games to Kelseyville and Upper Lake. “Another great game.”
Hailey Perez scored twice for the Cardinals (1-2, 7-2-1) while Sellena Carbajal and Jeanette Luevano had the other Clear Lake goals. Haylie Garcia picked up an assist.
Clear Lake is home Tuesday to play Willits at 6:15 p.m.
Middletown 6, Fort Bragg 2
At Fort Bragg, Ally Cherry scored four goals for the second game in a row and Trinity Wood had the other two goals as Middletown notched a win on the Mendocino County coast. Cherry also assisted on Woods’ two goals.
“This game was extremely physical, and our athletes held their ground in a fast-paced game,” Middletown head coach Cassi Clark said.
Clark gave high marks to the play of first-year soccer player Isa Barnes, a senior, who excelled at the center defensive midfielder position.
“For a first-year player, she never ceases to amaze me how versatile and naturally skilled she is,” Clark said. “I can only imagine what a powerhouse she would have been if she played all four years. She was quite literally throwing cannons for throw-ins.”
Middletown is 2-1 in league and 6-5 overall.
The Mustangs host Lower Lake on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
Lower Lake 4, Cloverdale 2
At Lower Lake, Genesis Medrano scored twice while Evelyn Vargas and Loena Inong added single goals in Lower Lake’s win over Cloverdale.
Vargas also had two assists as the Trojans improved to 3-0 in league and 7-3-1 overall. Inong and Nataly Perez added assists.
“We had a tough first half, but the girls made an amazing comeback,” Lower Lake head coach Ana Duran said. “We saw a lot of improvement in the second half with the chemistry and communication on the field. All of the girls fought back hard and made an amazing turnaround.”
Lower Lake visits Middletown on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
