Wolverines score game’s first 34 points, go on to defeat Trojans 44-14

LOWER LAKE >> It was homecoming for the Lower Lake Trojans on Friday night at Gordon Sadler Field, but it was the Willits Wolverines who were feeling right at home.
Willits (2-3) opened up as much as a 34-0 lead before going on to defeat Lower Lake 44-14 in North Central League I varsity football interlock action. The Trojans’ JV squad fared better, beating the Wolverines 28-12.
“We struggled to establish an offensive rhythm, and we took a couple of tough early injuries,” Lower Lake head coach Jay Jakubowski said.
In the varsity game, Roy Percoats scored on a 46-yard pass from Brody Shields, and Shields returned a fumble 38 yards for another touchdown. Anthony Russell caught a two-point conversion pass following the Trojans’ first score.
“Our defense was on the field for a majority of the night and that is never a good thing,” Jakubowski said.
Russell anchored the defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Anthony Ruiz forced another fumble recovered by Zamod Jackson.
“Brody Shield had a scoop-and-score fumble recovery on a play in the third quarter when the Willits player mishandled the ball,” Jakubowski said.
Willits took a 28-0 lead into halftime.
Lower Lake (1-2) was hurt by four turnovers.
In the JV game, Wyatt Chalecki ran for a pair of touchdowns while quarterback Michael Garner ran for one score and passed for another, connecting with Ryder Steffen.
Lower Lake’s teams are back in action next Friday in Kelseyville. JV action begins at 5 p.m.
