Cardinals improve to 1-1-1 with 36-0 shutout against Cloverdale Chargers

LAKEPORT >> The Westshore varsity youth football team won its first game of the season Saturday, beating the Cloverdale Chargers 36-0 during Mendo-Lake Empire Youth Football League action at Don Owens Stadium in Lakeport.
Westshore (1-1-1) led 22-0 at halftime on the strength of touchdowns by Luke Percaccio, that on a five-yard run; a five-yard touchdown pass from Pops Horne to Jake Hayes; and a Horne 39-yard interception return. LJ Hopkins made the conversion kick (good for two points in youth football) after the last two touchdowns.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the third quarter on a 40-yard Michael Knight Jr. touchdown run and a three-yard TD run by Horne, which was set up by a Percaccio 40-yard run.
“The kids played great tonight,” Westshore head coach Sid Percaccio said. “Cloverdale never gave up.”
Added Percaccio, “This was our first game having everyone healthy. These kids are ready to battle it out for the rest of the season and climb back up the rankings.”
Defensive leaders for the Cardinals were Hayes with five tackles, Horne with three tackles and the interception return for a touchdown, Knight Jr. with three tackles, and Leighton Butcher with two tackles and an interception.
Westshore hits the road Saturday to play Willits (0-2).
