Mustangs open league play with 2-1 setback at Willits

WILLITS >> Middletown’s Carter Rarick tied the game with a goal in the 30th minute, but the Willits Wolverines went on to beat the Mustangs 2-1 in North Central League I boys soccer action Thursday in Willits.
It was the league opener for both teams.
Willits scored in the 20th minute to move out to a 1-0 lead. Rarick found the back of the net 10 minutes later to tie it.
“Carter continued to create opportunities throughout the game, putting several shots on goal and keeping pressure on the Willits defense,” Middletown head coach Katie Robinson said.
Willits pushed ahead 2-1 with only five minutes left in the game.
“Our offense played well throughout the match, with the Mustangs dominating the midfield for much of the game and doing a great job moving the ball forward,” Robinson said.
Senior captains and midfielders Wyatt Davis and Luis Pamatz turned in strong performances, according to Robinson.
“Unfortunately, defensive errors and missed opportunities in front of the goal became the difference in this away game,” Robinson said.
The flow of the game was interrupted by several non-contact injuries, requiring coaches to come onto the field multiple times, according to Robinson. Additional delays occurred when balls were not available at the goals, creating numerous stoppages in play.
“Although this one didn’t go our way, the boys continued to compete and fight until the final whistle,” Robinson said. “We’ll take what we learned from this game, clean up our mistakes and get back to work.”
Middletown (0-1 league, 2-3-2 overall) hosts Cloverdale on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
