DUBLIN >> Lake County’s final three competitors in the North Coast Section Meet of Champions closed out their season Saturday at Dublin High School.

Middletown’s Dylan Caviness (boys pole vault), Angelina Bendure (girls shotput) and Lower Lake’s Alfonso Rones (boys discus) were trying to finish third or better in order to qualify for the CIF State Championships next weekend in Clovis.

Caviness, making his second straight appearance in the MOC, cleared the opening height of 10 feet, 10 inches.

“He has been battling an illness all week and tried to push through but just didn’t have the energy to do too much today,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall said. “He got the opening height of 10-10 but couldn’t do anything else. Dylan came a long way this year and tied our school record (12 feet even). While this wasn’t how he wanted his season to end, he has a lot to be proud of. This was his second year at MOC, and he should return for his senior year.”

Bendure, coming off a first-place finish a week at the North Coast Section Class A Championship in Santa Rosa, threw 29 feet, 9 inches on her first try before scratching on her final two throws. She finished 22nd.

Like Middletown’s Caviness, Bendure is only a junior and has her senior year to look forward to.

Yet another junior, Lower Lake’s Rones threw 128-10 on the second of his two attempts, scratching on his first and third throws. He placed 16th.

Earlier Friday, Middletown’s Hayden Xavier (100 meters, 200) and Crystal Duval (girls discus) failed to crack the top three in their respective events. Xavier had the best finish of any county athlete, placing 12th in the 200. Xavier also ran the anchor leg Friday on Middletown’s 4×100 relay team, which included Esteban Muniz, Jamisen Jackson and Luke Mace. The team set a school record while finishing 19th.
