UPPER LAKE >> Minus its top player, the Upper Lake Middle School A boys basketball team knocked off Obsidian Middle School 57-37 on Monday night in Upper Lake.
While Cayden Beecher was unable to go for the Wildcats, Jose Delgado Beecher certainly helped pick up the slack with 17 points, five assists and six steals. Desmond Solomon added 13 points and 14 rebounds, Cam Allison had 12 points, four rebounds and five steals, Benntt Guardino had nine points and nine rebounds, and Gage Schramm chipped in with seven points and four steals.
“They have some strong shooters and played hard,” Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson said of the Bears. “The first half was a good battle as we worked to find our rhythm, going into halftime up 23-18.”
Upper Lake began to pull away in the third quarter and never looked back.
“In the second half our boys responded the right way,” Gudmundson said. “We picked up the paced, moved the ball well, made smart decision and locked in defensively. After a slow start on the boards, we finished the night with over 30 rebounds.”
Added Gudmundson, “I’m proud of how this group stayed composed and played together. Our success isn’t built on one player; it’s about every athlete on the roster stepping up and contributing.”
The Wildcats are now 4-0 in league play and 8-0 overall.
Obsidian scoring wasn’t reported.
