SAN RAFAEL >> The Lake County Eagles, a 12-and-under boys basketball traveling team based out of Middletown and Hidden Valley Lake, won on all three of its games last weekend to capture the championship during the NBBA Holiday Hoop Classic, a state qualifying tournament, in San Rafael.

Coached by Mason Smith, Derrick Wienke and Jason Pisaro, the Eagles beat Mt. Carmel 54-22 in their opener behind William Pisaro’s double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds as well as nine points from Charlie Mulanda.

In the semifinals against St. Anselm, the Eagles won 34-26 as Isaiah Reyes led the way with 11 points and nine rebounds. Greyson Wienke added seven points and five assists while his brother, Asten, had five points, including a 3-pointer late in the game to seal the win.

In the championship game, the Eagles knocked off St. Sebastian 43-15.

“We were clicking on all cylinders and came out playing aggressively,” coach Mason Smith said.

Reyes again powered the Eagles with a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds while Greyson Wienke added eight points, four assists and two rebounds. Pisaro had six points and 10 rebounds.

“Really proud of the way our boys fought and brought home the championship, this being our first travel ball tourney and qualifying for one of the largest state tourneys in California,” Smith said.

“Our bench came up big,” Smith added. “Jaiden Griffith was coming down with some big rebounds and being physical, and Jace Johnson and Waylon Murphy were coming in with some timely buckets when asked. Darian Dubose gave us intensity on the defensive side of the ball.”
