KELSEYVILLE >> Talk about tying up a bunch of loose ends. The Kelseyville Knights did exactly that on Thursday while beating the Willits Wolverines 3-0 in North Central League I girls soccer action at Kelseyville.
Kelseyville (10-0 league, 20-1 overall) clinched no worse than a share of the league title with the victory, the team’s 20th of the season. It also was the Knights’ 13th straight win and 14th shutout of the season. If they win or tie in either of their two remaining games against Middletown or Lower Lake, they’ll clinch the outright league crown.
The Knights wasted no time taking the lead against Willits, scoring just four minutes into the game on a perfectly placed corner kick by Vanessa Reyes that teammate Kat Wheelan knocked into the net.
With 19 minutes left in the first half, a through ball by Wheelan found Kylee Denham, who finished it off with a clean shot into the net.
Kelseyville picked up an insurance goal late in the second half when Denham’s assist set up Mikaela Ricol’s goal.
“Willits kept fighting until the end, but the Lady Knights held strong,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said.
“We are beyond proud of how far this team has come,” Rodriguez said of the Knights, who have won 13 games in a row. “Thank you to our parents, fans and especially my assistant coaches Omar Rodriguez and Jackie Reyes for your constant support.”
Kelseyville High athletic director Kc White said it may be the school’s first league pennant in girls soccer even as Kelseyville’s boys team, coached by White, heads into the final full week of the season in contention for its own league title. The Knights, girls and boys, spent the last three seasons playing soccer in the winter season before moving back to the fall season this year.
