Girls top field during first league meet in Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG >> Middletown High School’s cross country teams certainly made their presence felt Wednesday during the first North Central League I meet of the season, this one taking place at the 3.1-mile Noyo Headlands Park course.
Middletown runners finished second both in the varsity boys and girls races. The Lady Mustangs topped the field in team scoring, placing four runners in the top seven.
“The core of our girls teams couldn’t be stronger,” Middletown head coach Taylor Tiraterra said. “Ren (Ueno), Len (Rivas) and Landon (Pisaro) are all potential star runners. We’re very excited to see what we can pull off this year as our new runners get better.”
Girls
Corinna Schlatter of St. Helena, the course record holder, dominated the girls race with a first-place time of 19 minutes, 4 seconds. Middletown’s Rivas finished second (23:25) in front of Fort Bragg’s Emily Olvera (23:26) and Kelseyville’s Aylin Aguilar (23:47). Middletown’s Nala Montgomery rounded out the top field at 25:08.
Middletown’s Lupita Cabrera came in sixth (25:09) and teammate Alivia Stark (25:21) was seventh.
A field of 31 runners competed.
Boys
Joann Garcia Blanco of Fort Bragg won the boys race in 17:32, finishing 14 seconds ahead of Middletown’s Pisaro (17:46). Ueno (18:10) secured third place by a similar margin over St. Helena’s Charlie Watson (18:25). Walker Aycock of Fort Bragg was fifth at 18:40.
Middletown’s Isael Haro also cracked the top 10, placing 10th in 19:34, just two seconds behind ninth-place finisher Gael Lopez (19:32) of Cloverdale. Other top-10 finishers were Oly Dodd of St. Helena, sixth in 19:06; Xander Caranicolas of Fort Bragg, seventh in 19:10; and David Hinojosa of Fort Bragg, eighth in 19:12.
