UPPER LAKE >> Led by All-Tournament selections Emma Davis and Hannah Tribby, the Middletown High School junior varsity volleyball team just missed bringing home the championship Saturday from the season-opening Cougar Invitational at Upper Lake High School.

Anderson Valley edged Middletown 25-18, 16-25, 15-13 in the finals.

It was a solid start for head coach Vanessa Davis’ club, a team that features, among others, her daughter Emma, a freshman outside hitter who was experiencing her first high school competition. She led the team with 30 kills and 16 digs and also had 18 service points, including 10 aces.

“I am very proud of the long stretch of matches these athletes played today,” Davis said. “The championship match, which was our fourth straight match with no break, was lost due to a missing team collective of 18 serves. Those are mistakes we can control.”

Added Davis, “I feel confident about all other aspects of play, which is a good early problem to have. It was our first time playing together and they all did amazing. I am excited to see the growth of these young athletes as we progress through our season together.”

Middletown rolled into the championship match after making quick work of its three pool opponents, beating Clear Lake 25-19, 25-17, Willits 25-13, 25-18, and Cloverdale 25-21, 25-7 in the minimum two sets of the best-of-three matches.

Tribby, a sophomore setter, certainly did her part for the Mustangs as she finished with 48 assists, 22 service points, 14 aces and 11 kills.

Other Middletown standouts were sophomore outside hitter Emma Jones with 22 service points, 14 kills, 10 aces and nine digs; freshman middle blocker Grace Williams with 14 kills, nine service points and five aces; sophomore middle blocker Jolene Holley with 11 kills and five aces; and opposite hitter Lilly Reyes, a freshman, with 19 service points, 11 kills and 10 aces.

The Mustangs (3-1) host St. Bernard on Friday.
