SANTA ROSA >> Last year’s North Central League I co-champions in boys volleyball are tied again for the top spot in the standings as the 2025 season winds down.

Roseland University Prep, a loser in straight sets to Kelseyville earlier this season when the two teams met in Kelseyville, rallied to hand the Knights their first league loss this year, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 16-14, on Tuesday night in Santa Rosa. RUP’s win leaves the two teams in a virtual tie atop the NCL I standings.

In a match where every set was contested, the Knights (6-1) fell just a bit short as they tried to wrap up the league race. Kelseyville has three league matches remaining – against Credo, Anderson Valley and Lower Lake – while Roseland University Prep (8-1) finishes league play Thursday against winless Lower Lake (0-7) in Lower Lake.

“While disappointed in the loss, we have to move onto the next match,” Kelseyville head coach Donelle McCallister said. “It’s the first five-set match we have played this year.”

Added McCallister, “RUP beat us with a tough defense and not committing many errors in hitting or serving.”

Jayden Teabo’s 28 kill paced the Knights, who had an eight-match winning streak snapped. Andon Beall added 18 kills. Otoniel Rivas led the team with 33 digs while Julian Armas had a team-best 49 assists. Jorge Bernal also had six kills and two aces, and George Baqleh served up three aces.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the team’s regular season, including a non-league match Wednesday against Rio Lindo in Healdsburg, McCallister said the Knights need to improve their play in one specific area.

“Our serve needs to be tougher and more consistent,” she said.
