REDDING >> The Middletown HEAT 16-and-under club volleyball team wrapped up play in the North State Tournament Series with a fifth-place finish this past weekend.
The HEAT scored a straight-set sweep in pool play, beating Trinity 21-12, 21-10, Adrenaline Kim 21-4, 21-4, and Momentum Blue 21-11, 21-14.
Advancing to the gold bracket, the HEAT again took care of business with a 21-16, 21-17 win over Adrenaline Todd before losing to Legacy Kendall, which posted a come-from-behind 16-21, 21-17, 15-7 victory over the HEAT.
“Pool play was outstanding,” HEAT head coach Vanessa Davis said. “We were fierce, confident and did not give any opponent a chance. It was amazing to see our dominance when we are all clicking.”
Added Davis, “This dominant play led to a quick first round in gold defeating Adrenaline Todd, who we have been battling all season long. Getting the win against this well-developed team was a momentum builder. The match against Legacy Kendall was an intense back-and-forth battle. We gave the first set everything we had and ultimately came out on top. This was the first time we ever won a set against Legacy Kendall. The second and third sets Legacy showed their strength, and we could not turn the heat back on.”
Stats leaders for the HEAT were outside hitter Emma Davis with 28 kills, 18 service points, 12 aces and 36 digs; middle blocker Crystal Duval with 24 kills, 19 service points, one ace and four blocks; setter Bridget Lisenbee with 55 assists, 23 service points, 10 aces and 23 digs; defensive specialist Samantha Maccario with 39 points, 25 digs and seven aces; and libero Trinity Galvan with 43 digs, 18 service points and six aces.
“Overall, HEAT Volleyball Club (12-under, 14-under and 16-under) had their best club season in over 10 years,” Davis said. “Everyone of these club divisions finished in the gold bracket the majority of all the tournaments played. I am proud of these young ladies.”
Next up for the HEAT 16-and-under club team is the West Coast Classic on Memorial Day weekend in Long Beach.
