COTTONWOOD >> The Middletown Heat 14-and-under club volleyball team went 2-1 in pool play and 3-2 overall during tournament action Sunday in Cottonwood.

“We were missing two key players that also play on our 16s team,” Heat head coach Erika Galvan said. “Everyone had to step up and some into different roles for the day. We changed from running one setter to having two setters. The girls had to shift quite a bit in the morning. We struggled to find the right groove a few times throughout the day.”

Konocti Bay defeated the Heat 10-21, 28-18, 15-6 in the opening round of pool play, but the Heat rallied with wins over the Matrix 21-8, 21-4 and Momentum Blue 21-9, 21-19.

Advancing to the gold bracket, the Heat beat Red Bluff 21-9, 25-23 before losing to Shasta 21-7, 21-13.

“We did well getting past the first round in the gold bracket,” Galvan said. “I am proud at how each girl stepped up into new roles and worked hard to fill in the gaps.”

Kala Bohan, a setter, had a big tournament from the service line with 17 aces. She also led the team with 25 assists. Middle hitter Grace Williams finished with 22 kills, six aces and 40 digs, Ella Del Zompo had 14 kills and eight aces, outside hitter added 15 aces and seven kills, and Gabby Keyes collected 11 aces, 10 assists and 52 digs.

The team returns to action March 23.
