HEALDSBURG >> The Middletown Mustangs managed just a single hit while falling 6-0 to the Healdsburg Greyhounds in non-league varsity baseball action Friday at Recreation Park in Healdsburg.

It was the season opener for the Mustangs (0-1), who trailed 4-0 after three innings. That was more than enough offense for Healdsburg starter Eric Nielsen, who blanked Middletown on just one hit during his five innings on the mound, striking out nine and walking two. Reliever Henry Smith worked the final two innings to complete the shutout, striking out three.

Middletown didn’t have many baserunners to work with in its season opener as Hunter Karp (1-for-3) had the team’s lone hit. The Mustangs also drew a pair of walks.

Healdsburg played flawlessly in the field while Middletown committed four errors.

The Greyhounds added two insurance runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.

Losing pitcher Landon Pisaro went the first 5 2/3 innings for Middletown. He allowed all of Healdburg’s seven hits and six runs, four of which were earned, while striking out three and walking six. Blake Costlow finished up with one-third of an inning in relief.

Middletown’s next scheduled game is Friday against John Swett in Crockett at 3:30 p.m.
