Lady Knights tie Eagles 1-1 in league play

Regina Rico’s goal gives Kelseyville girls brief 1-0 lead in second half

CLOVERDALE >> Regina Rico gave Kelseyville a brief 1-0 lead in the second half, but the Cloverdale Eagles came back to tie the Knights 1-1 in North Central League I girls soccer action Wednesday in Cloverdale.

“The lady Knights put up a great fight tonight in a hard-fought match,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said.

Rico scored on a penalty kick to make it 1-0. Cloverdale’s tying came on a free kick that bounced off the goal post and into the net.

“Our defense held strong,” Rodriguez said of the play of Knights Vanessa Reyes, Xiomara Arias, Arionna Sanderson and Mya Ogo. Midfielders Kylee Denham, Regina Rico, Jacky Chavez and goalkeeper Cassie Rodriguez battled relentlessly to keep us in the game.”

Kelseyville is 2-2-4 in league play and 6-8-4 overall.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this team; their fight, their sportsmanship and the way they support and lift each other up, no matter the outcome,” Rodriguez said. “This was a tough game, but we showed heart, and that’s what makes us strong.”

Kelseyville closes out the season at home Saturday against St. Vincent at 11 a.m.
