MIDDLETOWN >> Mia Hoogendoorn scored 28 points without playing much in the fourth quarter and the Middletown Mustangs came out shooting in the second half to beat the Lower Lake Trojans 53-34 in North Central League I varsity girls basketball action Tuesday night in Middletown.
Middletown (2-1 league, 9-4 overall) pulled away from Lower Lake (1-2, 5-9) with a 23-8 third quarter after taking a 20-13 lead into halftime.
“As a team, we came out of the locker room at halftime focused,” Middletown head coach Roxi Holt said. “We came out and did what we needed to do.”
Hoogendoorn, who is now one point behind Tyler Hunt (1,230 points) for second place on Middletown’s list of career scoring leaders, accumulated nearly half of her game total – 12 points – in the third quarter. Jordyn Harbison also had six of her nine points in the third quarter.
“Momentum definitely shifted in the third quarter,” Holt said.
“I’m proud of the girls’ play down the stretch,” Lower Lake head coach Shannon Tubbs said. “They continued to battle the whole way.”
Brooke Watson’s 12 points, all on 3-pointers, led the Trojans. Irianna Milano added seven points while Brooke Benson had five points and six rebounds.
The two teams were tied at 8 after the first quarter.
Izzi Hoogendoorn and Harley Holley had five points apiece for Middletown, which travels to Santa Rosa on Wednesday to play Sonoma Academy in a varsity-only game at 6:30 p.m.
Lower Lake hits the road Friday to play St. Helena.
In other girls basketball action Tuesday:
Kelseyville 54, St. Helena 32
At St. Helena, Ashlyn Wurm scored a season-best 20 points as the Kelseyville Knights put together back-to-back 20-point quarters to knock off the St. Helena Saints, their fifth win in six games.
“Everyone stepped up and contributed to the win,” Kelseyville head coach Tim Conrad said. “Our trap really hurt them. We created a lot of loose balls and turnovers. When they did break it, they didn’t have much time left to score against our half-court defense.”
Leading 9-2 after one quarter, Kelseyville went on to score 20 points in the second quarter and another 20 in the third quarter for a 49-23 lead. Wurm had 15 of the team’s 20 points in the second quarter.
Matisyn Mateer scored eight of her 13 points in the third quarter, including two 3-pointers. Nyejzniya Krohn joined Wurm and Mateer in double digits with 10 points. Briana Davis also had a big night with six points, seven rebounds (five offensive), eight assists, five steals and four blocks.

Clear Lake hits the road Friday to play Cloverdale.
Cloverdale 42, Upper Lake 37
At Cloverdale, “Gritty not pretty,” is how Cloverdale head coach Mac Butler described Cloverdale’s home win over Upper Lake on a night the Eagles were without All-League senior forward Cami Donahoo, who was out with an injury.
Amara Galvan’s 12 points and 10 apiece from Emme Reason and Ronni Hatcher helped Cloverdale improve to 2-1 in league play while Upper Lake, led by 10 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and two assists from Aimee Schaefer, dropped to 0-3.
“We haven’t had much time working with all of the starters,” Upper Lake coach Fawn Rave said. “Aimee and Alyssa (John) worked a lot of the court tonight and did well adjusting down low to outside and moving the ball into our low post.”
John finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks while Aubrey Suzor had eight points and seven rebounds.
“Aubrey Suzor had a good night working down low and we are looking forward to her growing through the season,” Rave said. “We definitely need to work on communication and listening.”
