Mustangs rally for five-set win

SANTA ROSA >> Trailing two sets to one in their best-of-five non-league varsity volleyball match with the Santa Rosa Panthers on Thursday night, the Middletown Mustangs rallied for a 25-17, 17-25, 8-25, 25-21, 15-11 victory, keeping them undefeated at 5-0.

Mia Hoogendoorn and Makayla Mace led the way, Hoogendoorn with 18 kills 20 digs, five blocks and one ace, and Mace with 13 kills, 12 digs and three aces. They had plenty of help from their teammates, including Carly Johnson with six kills and five blocks, Isa Barnes with 30 assists and 10 digs, and Jaylee Doris with five aces.

Middletown’s defense had 74 total digs.

The Mustangs return to action Saturday at the Rancho Cotate Tournament in Rohnert Park.

Santa Rosa won the junior varsity match 25-12, 26-24.

“The girls had a difficult time getting rolling,” Middletown coach Erika Galvan said. “We struggled to keep our serve in the first set. We woke up in the second set but couldn’t close out the win.”

Added Galvan, “SRHS was passing up everything we sent over. We just ended up making more mistakes than them in the second set. We are still figuring things out in our rotation as well.”
