UPPER LAKE >> The Upper Lake Cougars made the North Central League I North-leading Kelseyville Knights work for a 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 victory Tuesday night in Upper Lake. The match closes out the first half of league play for both teams.

Upper Lake (3-2) could have pulled into a first-place tie atop the North standings with a win, but Kelseyville (5-0) prevailed despite the Cougars’ best efforts.

“Oh, man what an exciting game,” Upper Lake head coach Fawn Rave said of the match. “I’m overall proud of the Lady Cougars. They played well. We’ve been moving things around and finding out what works. The girls worked well together and had some great saves.”

Kelseyville, coming off a 1-2 finish Saturday at the Rancho Cotate Tournament in Rohnert Park, had its hands full against the Cougars, according to head coach Donelle McCallister. “We committed a lot of errors as a team that the girls don’t usually make. Upper Lake came to play and put up both a strong defense and offense.”

Brooklyn Young led the Knights with 20 assists while teammates Riley Hanson and Olivia Bushey had a team-best eight kills. Cassidy Hanson, a freshman, finished with 16 digs. Bushey also had five aces.

In a battle of undefeated junior varsity teams, Kelseyville (5-0) took over sole possession of the North lead with a 25-12, 25-12 win.

Olivia Arredondo and Nya Martinez had six kills apiece for the Knights while Kaia Bohan served up five aces. Mali Rico had 10 assists.

For Upper Lake (4-1), Jordin Hughes finished with four aces, one kill and one solo block. Mariah Hoaglen, Kyra Santos, Lizzie Fernandez and Kylee Solorio had one kill apiece.

“My girls were down on themselves and couldn’t pull it together,” Upper Lake head coach Raelene Cromwell said. “I know they can play better than they did.”
