{"id":7101,"date":"2026-09-12T18:30:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T18:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briansumptersports.com\/?p=7101"},"modified":"2026-09-12T18:30:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T18:30:02","slug":"turnovers-hurt-upper-lake-against-cloverdale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briansumptersports.com\/?p=7101","title":{"rendered":"Turnovers hurt Upper Lake against Cloverdale"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Cougars stay close to Eagles in first half before dropping 35-0 road decision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lake County Sports on Facebook<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLOVERDALE &gt;&gt; The Upper Lake Cougars hung tough for a half but were ultimately the victims of their own turnovers in a 35-0 loss to the Cloverdale Eagles during North Central League I interlock varsity football action Friday night in Cloverdale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a rough game tonight to punctuate a challenging week,\u201d Upper Lake head coach John Toohey said after losing two days of practice, one to the Labor Day holiday and another, on Thursday, because of the Lucas Fire, which ultimately canceled all classes on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt definitely showed up in the details today,\u201d Toohey said of the lost practice time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upper Lake (1-1) fell behind 15-0 in the first half despite moving the ball deep into Cloverdale territory twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had the ball at their 1 twice and didn\u2019t score,\u201d Toohey said of costly turnovers that plagued the Cougars all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur offense had real trouble sustaining drives,\u201d Toohey said. \u201cCloverdale\u2019s defensive ends gave us trouble all night and beat us to the punch. They did a really good job defensively. They were too fast off the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Added Toohey, \u201cWhen we did have some offensive momentum early, we put the ball on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upper Lake rushed for 117 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wes Wyman led the defense with two interceptions and a total of 77 return yards on those two picks. He also had five tackles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is a special athlete,\u201d Toohey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brody Blancas led the team with seven solo tackles, two assists and two passes defended.
