KHS varsity volleyball team wins all six of its matches in straight sets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UPPER LAKE >> Winning all six of their best two-out-of-three matches in the minimum two sets, the Kelseyville High School varsity volleyball team walked off the court with a season-opening championship in the annual Cougar Invitational tucked away in its back pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelseyville (6-0) defeated Fort Bragg, Ferndale and Middletown in pool play before advancing to the playoff round. There the Knights knocked of Clear Lake and St. Helena before beating Cloverdale 25-9, 25-21 in the finals. The championship match paired last season\u2019s North Central League I co-champs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trio of Knights earned All-Tournament honors, all of them underclassmen and two of them sisters. Honored were junior Riley Hanson, sophomore Madison Byrne and freshman Cassidy Hanson, who was nothing short of sensational in her season and high school debut, leading the Knights with 32 kills and 15 aces while also finishing second on the team with 54 digs behind Byrne\u2019s 57.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other leaders were Riley Hanson with 70 assists, Brooklyn Young with 20 assists, Lilly Hamel with three blocks, Olivia Bushey with 26 kills, and Grace Peterson with 10 aces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPaelynn Beall did a great job (at middle blocker) both at the net and back row, coming up with key plays,\u201d Kelseyville head coach Donelle McCallister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beall, a sophomore, finished with 38 digs, 14 kills and three aces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelseyville wasn\u2019t even at full strength as junior Jordyn Wurm was out because of illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe team is still learning how to meld all their talents, but they worked hard today,\u201d McCallister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tournament host Upper Lake finished third and was led by All-Tournament selection Alyssa John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four of Lake County\u2019s five teams advanced to the playoff round, with only Lower Lake missing out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Middletown went 2-2 on the day, taking second in its pool before losing to St. Helena in the playoff round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mustangs beat Ferndale 25-9, 25-13 and Fort Bragg 25-19, 25-20 before losing a hard-fought 25-23, 25-19 match to pool champion Kelseyville. St. Helena defeated the Mustangs in another hotly contested match, rallying for a 12-25, 27-25, 15-9 victory in the playoff round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior libero Jordyn Harbison led the team in digs with 62 over the four tournament matches. She also had a team-best eight aces. Other Middletown leaders we Emma Davis with 33 digs, 27 kills and six aces, Izzi Hoogendoorn with a team-high 30 kills, Bridget Lisenbee with 32 assists as well as seven aces, and Trinity Galvan with 32 assists and six aces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe girls played very strong against both Fort Bragg and Kelseyville,\u201d Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said. \u201cOur best game was against Kelseyville. We went into bracket play against St. Helena and we lost steam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Galvan, \u201cOverall, I\u2019m very happy how this group is coming along.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelseyville and Middletown were the only Lake County teams that submitted results to Lake County Sports as of Saturday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cougar Invitational for junior varsity teams took place Saturday at Upper Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
